Every month, over 675,000 online searches for a SHARP rating are made on the internet. This is a wonderful figure. At SHARP we are very happy to know that motorcycle riders are checking their helmet ratings or doing their research before buying a new one.
Exactly which helmets riders are checking out is also interesting, and it’s a different list for all searches, and for searches made by people living in the UK. Let’s take a closer look at the Top 5 helmets viewed on the SHARP website.
In fact, six helmets made the “top 5” list, four being the same for both UK and global searches. All bar one are full-face models, which is the most popular style of helmet, thanks largely to the protection it offers riders. The Shoei Neotec 3 was the only system/modular flip-up style of helmet to make the top 5 list and it was the most expensive too, but clearly a popular choice. The full face Shoei NXR2 was also a hit with almost the same number of searches as the Neotec 3.
Five out the six helmets have been awarded five stars. We can’t tell if this is because our website visitors are selecting to view only five star rated helmets, or because the most popular helmets simply have top safety scores. The odd-one out is the Ruroc Atlas 4 which made it onto the UK Top 5 list. Is this down to great promotion by the Ruroc team, are riders curious about this new brand and how it performs in the SHARP safety tests? Either way, we are very happy to see this brand getting good hits and a great 4 star rating. Remember, it’s not all about the star rating: if an affordable helmet fits and is comfortable for your style of riding, these should be your priorities when selecting a new helmet.
The HJC C70 and AGV K6 helmets were not a surprise on either list, as both brands produce great quality helmets in a mid-price range, and they consistently get good SHARP star ratings.
Applause from the SHARP team, however, goes to the budget helmet from MT: the Revenge model, retailing at around £65 in the UK, is an excellent example of why the SHARP scheme is so helpful. You can pay £600 for a Shoei Neotec 3 or you can pay £65 for the MT, but what the SHARP tests reveal is that they both perform exceptionally well in our tests and deserve their 5 star ratings. All our testing proves that the price of a helmet is not an indicator of how well it will perform in our safety tests. If you have a choice of two helmets, but the lower priced helmet doesn’t fit, or isn’t suitable for the type of riding you do, then it may not be the best option. Keep looking and keep trying helmets on. If you have a choice of helmets, the SHARP safety rating is another factor to help you select the safest helmet.
New ratings are being published throughout 2025. Please keep your suggestions coming in, we have not yet decided on all the helmets to test this year…which models would you like to see with a SHARP star rating in 2025? Fill in the form today
